Darth Santa Fe
Добавлен 9 мар 2010
I like doing a lot of odd projects involving model trains of all shapes and sizes. Some of my videos are reviews, some are repairs and restorations, some are kit builds, and sometimes a non-train related video might squeeze its way in. Whatever it is I'm doing though, you can bet something unusual is going to come up now and then.
Darth's Train Shop - Tyco A-Team Train Set
eBay link: www.ebay.com/itm/256582180265
This time around I have a Tyco A-Team train set in need of a tune-up! A lot of the playset figures and vehicles are missing, but the train set itself is practically unused!

DJH HO Scale USRA Light 4-6-2 Review
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.21 день назад
For this video, I'm reviewing the USRA Light 4-6-2 kit made by DJH in the 1980's! Although not without some issues here and there, it's a high quality model that looks great and runs well. You just have to take your time to get some things done right. These kits are rare and can be expensive, but once in a while you may also come across a good deal for one. Model was painted with Scalecoat II B...
AHM O-Scale IHB 0-8-0 Kit Build and 3-Rail Modification
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.Месяц назад
Back in the 70's, AHM offered a line of all different models for 2-rail DC O-scale made by Rivarossi. For this video, I got the IHB 0-8-0 and powering kit! All of my O-gauge track is 3-rail AC though, so along the way, I also modified the model to work with it, and things turned out great!
Fixing an old Bachmann HO 2-10-4 Texas Chugger

Picked this one up a while back for a decent deal and finally got to finishing it! These 2-10-4 steam engines are sloppy and not really well built, but can run alright with more work than most will want to do. It still needs a little more fine-tuning, but things at least turned out alright! On a side note, this is the first video to come from my now operational new computer, and not only did it...
Darth's Train Shop - Tetsudo Brass/Bronze F3A Repair

Sold, thanks for bidding! Auction ended Friday (4/26/24) Time for another Darth's Train Shop project! This time around is an old Tetsudo model of an F3A. It was in awful condition and needed a lot of work done, and even if it's not a realistic model, it turned out pretty good! And for those of you who voted in my little railroad poll a couple weeks back, now you get to see the results!
Gilbert HO ALCO DL600 Repair and Review

Rivarossi Motor Brush Upgrade for Better Performance

Rivarossi's motors are typically good runners, but with a simple brush upgrade, they can be made even better! With only a few minutes of modification to some new Athearn brushes, these motors can run quieter and more reliably.
Upgrading the Original Tyco Super 630 with NWSL Wheels
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.4 месяца назад
As I showed in my other video, the original Tyco Super 630 is a pretty nice model, but the chassis was largely let down by poor quality wheels. I wanted mine to be a better runner, so I decided to give it an upgrade with some wheels from NWSL! Sorry, this conversion doesn't work for the Power-Torque drives.
Build and Review of the Original 1957 Athearn "GP9"

Build/Restoration of the Original Athearn Metal RDC!

Before the plastic bodied F7 and GP9(GP7) that would change the HO scale market and help set the design standards still used today, Athearn was a small manufacturer making various freight car kits from metal, paper and wood. Tenshodo T-Evolution Motorized Truck Review - Affordable successor to SPUD

Tenshodo is still making motorized trucks for HO gauge track, and not only do they now have coreless motors, but they're extremely affordable! Bachmann Spectrum DASH 8-40CW - Tune-Up, Build & Review
My lord darth thank you. I have been looking for this all day. Now,I,can really clean my dash 8-40.
And in SP black widow livery ❤❤❤
Very nice vintage review. Original box is superb!
Very nice rebuild. They sure are noisy though !
Cordialement.
@@jeanlouis866 Thanks! It could be that the “Route of the 400” and “C&NW” decals were specific to the American release. Most examples around here have them.
IHB was a NYC subsidiary..This is the most powerful 0-8-0 ever built - the class U-4a Numbers 101 to 103 built by the NYC's favorite supplier, Alco. Alco had the American rights to the Gresley Conjugated Valve Gear, used to actuate the third cylinder between the frames. The third cylinder, in addition to adding power, gave more steady torque than a two cylinder machine. Add the tender booster and you had a monster with enough grunt to push endless strings of cars over the Blue Island Hump at a relentless two miles per hour.
Hi, been loving your channel, especially the series about building the Bowser engine kit builds. Hoping you can offer a suggestion or two about how I can restore some tiny rivet details on my boiler. Accidentally filed some off at least in part.. any help is appreciated. Scott
@@scottkintzing2514 Micro-Mark makes some 3D rivet decals that work pretty well. Another method that can work is to use a tiny bit of gel type super glue applied with the tip of a needle. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the fast response. I think I saw that you had done the super glue method on a build series that I watched. Will try super glue. Rivets are barely perceptible when perfect. Thanks again, really enjoy the content that you provide.
I'd be too tempted to dcc/sound it, with LED's. But I'm crazy like that
If it were mine, I would scan the stickers and turn them into waterslide decals. I doubt I'd ever really buy one of these, though! Cool, nonetheless.
Your model railroad restoration videos are always great to watch!
Wow....i love these time capsules...i love to think what eyes set upon it first time and what hands played and imagined a real train on their floor....yes,it looks like the kid had more interest in accessories or that trains were not in his interest.......great watch
Good to see you're still at it.
Great job on getting that thing just perfect. I love using Brasso for wheels! In finescale gauges (P4) it allows me to be able to polish even stainless steel wheels to a mirror finish (so good that I can easily read sentences in the reflection) whilst not changing the 0.5mm deep flange at all. I use it on a soft cotton wheel for a dremel knockoff (use it only for the high speeds and for that it’s great) and even found that it left a better finish that my leather strop, which is incredible considering that the natural abrasive in it is probably somewhere in the range of 1/4-1/2 micron or 25000-50000 grit!
What, no A-Team van?
@@user-ff2iz5qc6l Yeah, that’s one of the missing pieces. My guess is that it was a kid’s set, but only the vehicles and figures were really taken out and played with while the rest stayed in the box.
They have always been one of my favites to run, i have sseveral i run in my collection i run. keep them running.
Seems to me that "Tyco" was at the low end of quality (?)
@@elythomaslumber Yes, after Mantua sold the Tyco brand their diesels and a couple steam engines were cheapened a lot for use in low cost train sets. They were a well regarded brand before the 70’s, when practically everything they made was bullet-proof.
@@DarthSantaFe ah, ok thanks for information! Love your channel as a H0 railway collector of US-rolling stock of all brands here in Germany. Got a lot of "Bluebox" Athern some years ago, think you them very well... 🙂
It looks great to me. Hope it runs well, or easily fixed to get running
Been on RUclips since late 2015 you are the first that I know of besides me that uses lithium grease on the plastic gears. I've only been using it for more than a decade plus years. Everything else I use label products. In my 61 to years being a model railroader.😅 All mine keep running. Many are over 30 to as much as 55 years old if not 100 year's on. Doing preventative maintenance is the key to keeping them running.
@@christophermondone6864 It was Bachmann from maybe the late 80’s through 90’s where I found lithium grease being used, and I noticed it stayed slick no matter how old it was. The tube of it I’m using now was cheap and has been working great!
@@DarthSantaFe it's always worked best for me, especially for plastic years in the engines, lasted longer no damage to them helps keeping them from cracking or chipping the best that I can tell, from my experience using it my late uncle turned me onto using it.
That is super cool
Try K4 decals in Dayton Ohio for your decals!
@@williamskirvin2211 They only have freight car decals for IHB from what I’m seeing, but thanks for the suggestion!

What a honey of a set! Thank you for sharing another awesome video Darth. Have a wonderful evening.

Very nice head to head comparison. Thanks
Hello, @1:10:00 i repair roundhouses that have that gear, i discovered that no one super glues the little black turning gear on the metal rod that turns the wheels. thats why ive bought many roundhouses on ebay and every single one di not have the little black gear super glued to the metal rod for the wheels.
Menards Track is super strong
I had one of these, it felt sounded like a blender and operated like it was made of wet sand.
It must have been somewhat of an adventure to construct, and I have to admit this is the first time I'm hearing of the company DJH Model Loco. I only know the full name after looking them up due to seeing this video and to think they been around for 47 years being established in 1977. Your assessment and description of the build were on the money, and I think the skill level warning was most needed. Great video, Jersey Bill
Märklin H0 locomotives will run happily on DC. But good luck changing direction by changing polarity. These motors are 'allstrom motors'. Changing direction invovles switching between the 'anchor' coils. These are wound in opposite directions. The switching relay changes direction by connection the 'opposite' coil. Converting to 2 rail involves isolation one wheelset from the other. Old Märklin locomotives are built like tanks. If you oil and maintain them properly, they can last almost forever. Modern Märklin locos are more fragile, but still really good. Really good job with the conversion!
Darth, I really love how you put this kit together. It looks great and your replacement parts work well. I hope you will show us the results off your lighting of the headlight and the tender light. Maybe even a cab light. Your choice of motor was right on and I thought it ran quite well.
that pacific is beautiful
Good job (especially with the paint)! In terms of British kits, I’m looking forward to your build of the London Road Models one, and I highly recommend the Brassmasters/Finney LNER A1/A3 kit, as it is regarded as the best in detail and construction, and it is also extremely easy to modify it to have working inside motion. I’d recommend using CSB or Varney type suspension, a gearbox that can be routed to go through the firebox to keep it from sight, and to use the high quality and very fine Ultrascale wheels and crankpins to go with the kit. Brassmasters/Finney kits along with Dave Bradwell kits are really seen as the crème de la crème of kits there.
@@1471SirFrederickBanbury Interesting, I might have to look into one of those sometime! Looks like some quality stuff.
@@DarthSantaFe also, I should have mentioned in the first post that DJH’s kit toolings have been sold to Squires tools, who don’t have a good web catalogue and are pretty much an exclusive mail order company, with the few kits left going to Ellis Clark Trains, and are selling for decent prices, so that area is a bit turbulent if you were looking at other DJH kits.
@@1471SirFrederickBanbury Thanks! I noticed their 00/HO kits were no longer online, so that’s good to know.
@@1471SirFrederickBanbury Just checked and it looks like the full catalog is now back online through the DJH website! From what I'm seeing, Squires is maintaining and even modernizing the DJH website for a better online search and sales system, and everything should be back into full swing once they have all the tooling functioning at their Consett facility.
@@DarthSantaFe that’s wonderful! Squires used to be criticised often for not having a good website, but this is a nice change of pace. As they also own the S.E. Finecast line of kits, it would be nice if they put those under DJH too.
This guy is legendsry with videos for all times...wow
Excellent, thanks for that.
Nice work on the build, what model of coreless motor is that and where can I get it?
@@DavidSanchez-ks4ub I used this motor for it: www.ebay.com/itm/262724051259
@@DarthSantaFe Thanks
Did you film the build process for this one? Would've been neat to see how this shapes up against a brass loco of similar vintage.
@@ohiovalleyrailfan Sorry, no build video for this one. I do have another (former) DJH kit that will eventually be getting that though.
Runs nice.
Great work! A question does it come with sprung drivers?
@@hakannilsson9490 No, as far as I know, DJH doesn’t use spring drivers in any of their kits.
It is always possible to file clearance for hornguides made by MJT, Alan Gibson, and High Level Kits, and use their hornblocks and either individual springs, compensation levers, or continuous spring beams (CSB), the latter of which, gives the best possible ride quality and tracking. The Scalefour Forums have excellent info on every little detail and part of suspension and incorporating it in a model. It’s easier than it sounds!
@@1471SirFrederickBanbury I am trying out a model from HLK right now and have some horn blocks to go with it. I just found that the Alan Gibson wheels I got for it aren’t so great though, so I’m going to see if maybe I got a defective set.
@@DarthSantaFe Gibson wheels are interesting. Some people have never had a problem with them, while some have had insanely poor luck. Their hornblocks however, are pretty good, and their buffers and handrail knobs are the best though. What were you having problems with? I’ve heard solutions for even the most uncommon of issues.
@@1471SirFrederickBanbury Some of the axle holes aren’t centered, with one wheel having over a millimeter of wobble. If replacements aren’t possible I might have to fill the holes and redo them with a lathe.
Very cool
Wow I’ve never seen these before! What other American models have they made? Curious about a light mikado :>
DJH had made the USRA Light Mikado as well, they're just very hard to find. I know they've also made the NYC J1b Hudsons. There's probably other American models as well but their main focus is European models.
@@DavidSanchez-ks4ub Another one they made was the Alaska 2-8-0 since those were also used in Europe during the war.
DJH actually made a number of North American steamers: USRA Light Pacifics and Mikes, two variations of NYC J1 Hudsons (One with short and one with long tender), a Santa Fe 4000 class Mikado, A U.S. Army 2-8-0 and a Baldwin "boxcab" diesel. I own a built USRA Mike and an unbuilt J1 Hudson.
This is a model I would love to own given I collect ACL equipment and have a love for the real #1504. I have three BLI P-5-A 4-6-2s #1519, #1523, and #1540. I wish BLI would do #1504.
very interesting review on an obscure product! This is a rather impressive paint job, it turned out great! The DJH pacific certainly did fill in a niche in the market at the time. Although I think Oriental Limited's powerhouse USRA 4-6-2 woulda been a pretty good competitor for the time, also being cheaper than brass, a hybrid of diecast and brass construction, very similar to this model. But having more separate brass detail parts added and RTR. Im not sure how the price would have compared to this, but it was intended to be marketed as "cheaper than brass but with all the brass levels of detail"
@@trainman440 It would be interesting to compare the two. It might have been a better value at the time though. Back at that time, the pound was worth significantly more than the dollar, so anything coming from England was expensive compared to others.
I find it very odd that whoever produced the shell gave it the road number of 70 as all the DDA40X's were in the 69XX range.
These old models HAD to be noisy. It was the sound system of the era.
I would never have scrubbed the body shell with a toothbrush. You run the risk of damaging the paint. I normally use a soft 1“ paintbrush for that kind of work. If oily, I would add 1-2 drops of mild dishwashing liquid to a bucket of water. Rinse the model well after washing.
Have you ever installed a DCC decoder in any of your HOB models ?
@@SouthernAlco No, aside from the Rapido Turbo Train, I only run DC.
